Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Job Purpose

The Data Scientist contributes to the organisational goals by extracting quantifiable insights from data, by using machine learning, AI and statistical analysis to deliver valuable business insights that helps with strategic decisions.. Run with intermediate projects with little manger involvement. Implement projects that deliver ROI

  • Business problem identification
  • Relationship building across the business
  • Data gathering (internal and external)
  • Follow instructions from manager and meet timelines
  • Be able to follow through on intermediate project without or little manger involvement
  • Sign-off work with manger
  • Deliver on project outcomes and timelines management
  • Data cleaning
  • Responsible for upskilling in data, modelling and business knowledge
  • Feature extraction and design
  • Assist peers with data science logic and thinking
  • Machine learning algorithms
  • Presentation and communication of results up to exco level
  • Implementation of models/data products
  • Monitoring and quantification of model/data product’s effects on Telesure, its clients and stakeholders

Essential:

  • Grade 12 (Standard 10) with University Entrance (NQF4)
  • 3-year degree in Information Technology / Sciences / Informatics / Applied Mathematics / Statistics / Quantitative sciences / Actuarial sciences / Data Mining

Desirable:

  • Master’s Degree in Information Technology / Sciences / Informatics / Applied Mathematics / Statistics / Quantitative sciences / Actuarial sciences / Data Mining

Experience:

Essential:

  • 3 – 6 years working experience within an analytical, data science or computer science environment

Desirable:

  • Experience in the Financial Services Industry – specifically Short-Term Insurance
  • Any analytical experience

Knowledge of:

  • Deep knowledge of Statistics
  • Programming (SAS/R/SQL)
  • Basic business and accounting principles
  • Basic database knowledge
  • Machine learning techniques
  • Presentation tools (Powerpoint)

  • Ability to apply Machine learning techniques
  • Above average ability to program a computer
