Introduction
The Inclusive Economic Development (IED) division undertakes research to transform educational outcomes and increase economic participation. It recognises that education and the economy have long been linked and conducts research to understand educational performance and improve learning outcomes, and to interrogate social, spatial and structural obstacles to economic participation.

The City Region Economies working group in IED is currently undertaking a study which seeks to understand the “performance and potential of service exports from South Africa”, and is looking to appoint an economist with a track record of research on value chains for South Africa. We anticipate that the assignment will take a maximum of 15 days.

Key Responsibilities

1.Screening and selection of firms involved in tradable services
2.Cold calling and scheduling of interviews with key informants from industry, industry associations and government
3.Experience facilitating semi-structured interviews with industry role-players
4.Producing high-level summaries of critical issues
5.Dynamic feedback and close interaction with HSRC research team in refining and improving interview tool / probing emergent issues





Requirements
Key Requirements for the Position

1. A Masters degree (or higher) in Economics (non-negotiable)
2. Experience in industry/firm level research, specifically value chain analysis
3. At least 5 relevant publications on themes related to industrial development in South Africa and/or Africa
